Know how to use a wood bat? If not, it's real simple. Just remember to hit with the label up or down. You want to hit "on the grain" which is the hardest part of the bat, NEVER on the flat part (trademark). Always try to put the sweet spot (that 3-4 inch area starting about 2 inches from the end of the bat) on the ball. Some guys tape the sweet spot with white tape to 1) keep the grains down and 2) provide a visual training aid whereby you always try to put the taped part of the barrel on the ball. It's an excellent way to learn how to use your hands correctly. Nothing feels better than catching that ball on the sweet spot! DO NOT hit rubber dimple (batting cage) balls with wood. That will certainly turn your bat into kindling. Just remember that all good wood has a limited life-span. They all break eventually. Using it correctly (as well as caring for it correctly) will only maximize your investment.
"Boning" a bat ... What does that mean? In the old days, players would use big old hard soup bones to rub the barrels of their bats with. What they were actually doing was crushing the grain, keeping the bat flat and smooth. Guys do it today using various things such as metal bars, glass bottles and fence posts. A well-boned bat will take on a smooth shiny appearance that many believe makes for a harder barrel. Many players swear by this.
